How to select the correct fabric marking pen for your project

There are many tools out there in the sewing and quilting world to make our life easier. Fabric marking pens are a tool that I can't live without. So many to choose from water soluble, air erase, steam away and iron away to name a few.

Clover makes chalk wheels that work great when you are following the edge of your ruler or patten. These chalk wheels are also available in many colors, pink, yellow, blue and white are colors that are always found in my studio.

Mark Be Gone pens are blue and purple with erasers to remove the marking. I use these pens with making garments and using fabrics other than quilters cottons.

The above pen is a white marking pen by Clover. It works like your standard ball point pen. The first time I used this pen I was skeptical. After trying this wonderful pen I would not quilt without it. It shows up as a bright white on dark fabrics and works on colors as light as yellow. You will want to test any fabric marking pens before using it on your project.

There are also fabric pens that are made to stay and not wash away. Tsukineko Inks are a wonderful ink that I have every color. I have been using these since they were brought into the sewing world about 5 years ago. Due to its blendability, washability and versatility, this quick-drying craft ink has become a favorite among fabric artists. And because it's water-based and non-toxic, All-Purpose Ink is fun for artists of all ages. Use it on wood, paper, leather and other porous surfaces too. All-Purpose Ink must be heat set on fabric for permanence. Heat set between color applications to prevent bleeding. Or layer colors to achieve a blended "watercolor" effect. These also work wonderful for making labels for your quilts and memories.

Just a couple last tips:
Read the entire instructions for your fabric marking pens.

Test the pen on the fabrics you are using before making all of the markings you need to sew or quilt with.

Test the size the pen writes.

Test the color you want to make sure you can see the color on your fabric or texture of the fabric.

Test to ensure that the mark will remove from your fabrics.

Basic Sewing Supplies

Sewing machine in good working condition. Serviced once a year is suggested by most manufactures.

Sewing machine needles. Check your sewing machine manual to make sure you get the right style of needles for your brand. Get in the habit of changing your needles every eight hours of sewing or after each project.

Pins and pin cushion. You will need to have many needles, long for quilting, silk for fine fabrics and glass head for pressing. Never stitch over pins with your sewing machine.

Seam ripper, mine is named "Jack". Unsewing is something that I of us do one time or another. Get a good one so that you do not dislike ripping when you need to remove those stitches.

Fabric scissors. Don’t cut paper with them. In fact, don’t cut anything but fabric with them. And if you want nice clean cuts, invest in a more expensive one. Cheap ones will do, but you really do get what you paid for in this instance. Although, you probably don’t need to purchase the professional grade ones that are $40-50.
Safety pins. These guys will come in handy, especially for getting elastic through casings.
Measuring tape. It’s impossible to sew without this. So get a nice thick sturdy one.
Bobbins. Have extra empty ones to make switching thread colors easier.
All-purpose thread. White is also a nice color to have in stock. Once you get more advanced in sewing, you might find the need to get into specialty thread. But for now, all-purpose will work for your projects.
Iron and ironing board. Not pictured above. To have a more professional look and to make sewing easier, you will want to press your fabric at the seams.

Road to California just 2 days left

It is amazing where the quilting world is going. The quilts at the Road to California show are outstanding. You will see quilts from artistic to whimsical and even realistic.

Once you take a stroll through an exhibit as is being shown here in Ontario, California your perceptive changes on what you might achieve. The inspiration that you will get from looking at more the 100 quilts is undiscriminated.

At this show I was also able to take a few classes that taught me new techniques and quilting tips. I can not wait to share and teach each of you.

With the turn of the year, we have many exciting things to announce. First and foremost is the purchase of a new, larger facility!

In early October, we began the task of moving our business, and within the next two weeks, the task will be complete. With our new facility, we have increased our warehouse and manufacturing space, as well as expanded our front offices to include in-house online QBOT Support. Most exciting, though, is that we have increased our filming studio space for clubs, classes, and instructional video production. We now have two dedicated spaces: a sewing studio and a quilting/frame studio. We have also increased our ‘general filming space’ for short film shoots and mini segments. Throughout the year, we’ll have some exciting industry guests stop by, utilizing our video production space. The fruits of that labor will be forthcoming in the form of Club webinars/webisodes, as well as instructional DVD’s available on the market later in the year.

Our second announcement, speaking of webinars/webisodes, is that we have introduced a new Club…the Ultimate Quilt Club. Like our QBOT Club and Software Club, we will provide tips and tricks concerning various products and techniques found in the quilting and sewing industry. We have filmed several webisodes which are currently in post-production and will be available mid-month each month. Complete details on the Ultimate Quilt Club can be found under the “Club Hub” heading; it’s sure to be a fun Club (free with the purchase of the accompanying book!).

Finally, we are continuing to work on new compatibilities for QBOT. We have heard from many of you who have received upgraded systems over the holidays. Some changes require minimal adjustment to your QBOT set-up (like longer drive wires), while some require more substantive alterations (like new frame-mounting hardware). In the very near future, we will be adding to our growing list of compatibilities…if you have specific questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We’re very excited to be part of this continually-growing industry, which produces multiple avenues for creativity for the quilter, as well as providing for the many family-owned/operated small businesses within the community. On behalf of our company and our dealer network, we thank you for allowing us to share another great year with you.

Tips on making a rag quilt

We are going to be making 7"x7" blocks that will finish as 6" blocks. Each square would have two pieces of fabric with an additional inch for a half-inch extra around the square. The extra will become the fringe on the quilt.

Suggested Supplies:
a rotary blade cutter
a rotary mat
a rotary ruler
sewing machine in good working condition with a walking foot
100% cotton batting
Thread to piece your blocks together

The batting squares go between your two layers of fabric. They should be smaller than your fabric by two times your intended seam allowance plus a half inch. 5.5" is what size I like to cut the cotton batting.

This is the point in time where you’d make a “quilt sandwich” with 7 inch square batting pieces and sew an X in the middle of each square to quilt it, if you were quilting it. And if you want to make a nice thick quilt, go right ahead. But the method I use is time saving and makes a blanket that is plenty warm in the winter, but nice in the summer as well. Quilt each square by sewing an X across the sandwich from corner to corner.

Do not pre-wash your fabrics because you will want the fringes should be nice and fluffy looking. The more you wash it, the softer and fluffier it become. Note: check the lint catch often.

Supporting Our Troops

Recently we at LiTen Up heard about the efforts of our local US Representative to ship care packages to US troops in Afghanistan. We put our heads together to decide what we could do to support the effort and make the holidays a little more cheerful for our troops who are protecting our freedoms every day overseas.

We remembered the pillowcase class that Denise gave and made a bunch of them with happy fabrics that we use for our kits and projects, etc.

We had recently purchased a small tissue holder at our local quilt guild’s semi-annual quilt show which we thought would make a nice gift, so analyzed it and cranked out a bunch of them. We will be putting the instructions for the tissue holder on the website in the near future.

When Denise was giving us a lesson on our embroidery machine, she made Christmas ornaments and bookmarks using white thread and water soluble stabilizer.

To assist in their packing effort, we donated boxes and tape.

Shelley and the two boys made a trip to the Congressman’s office to drop off some of the gifts.

We have already received word that the first shipment of boxes arrived and they are being distributed throughout the country (Afghanistan) to military bases there.

My brother was in the military during Desert Storm I was unaware of opportunities like this at that time. I am sure glad to help today and in the future.

Tissue Holders

* 7-1/2” x 5-5/8” lining fabric
* 6-1/4” x 5-5/8” cover fabric

Align the short edge of the cover fabric along the short edge of the lining fabric. Make sure to align the longer edges so everything matches up at the end. Stitch ¼” seam.

Align the other short edge of the cover fabric along the short edge of the lining fabric. Stitch. There will be a “pooch” in the lining fabric.

Press right side out.

Press each of those two seams toward the lining fabric. The result is a ¼” edge of the lining fabric showing up next to the cover fabric. It gives the illusion of a narrow binding.

With the lining fabric down, turn in the bound edges 1-1/2”. On each of the raw edges, stitch 1/8” or 3/16” seam, being sure to catch the cover fabric in the seam.

Turn the pocket right-side out. Use a point turner or purple thang to smooth out the corners. Insert a new package of tissues.

* WOF cut: Cut the larger dimension as the strip (7-1/2” or 6-1/4”). Subcut into 5-5/8” rectangles.

Making designs for QBOT. Are there easy and quick ways that designs can be made for QBOT? This is a question that has often been asked.

The first thing you usually need for a QBOT design is a pattern. This can be from a purchased pattern, coloring book page, or even a hand drawn design. It is easiest to transfer each newly created design is with Golden Threads Paper and a scanner. I have a sketch book and each design that inspires me I transfer to Golden Threads Paper using a Sharpie marker. Once I have traced the pattern/design I take it to my scanner and save it to my computer.
This is a tip that was given to my by Cheryl Barnes of Golden Threads.

QBOT COMPATIBILITY LIST

The current compatibility list for QBOT is shown below. In order for QBOT to work you will need a quilting frame, sewing machine and stitch regulator built in the machine or a Quilters Cruise Control Stitch Regulator available. As we develop and test the adapter kit for the other quilting machines and frames, we will write the instructions and make QBOT available for these products. The development and test cycle for certain frames can be lengthy, so we ask for your patience as we expand QBOT’s compatibilities.

If QBOT is moving the incorrect direction what should I do?

If QBOT is moving the carriage in the incorrect direction, there can be a couple of things amiss:

check the wiring harness plugs up at the QBOT; make sure "x" is plugged into the "x port" and "y" into the "y port"
check the wiring harness plugs at the drive assemblies; make sure "x" is plugged into the x drive assembly (frame length) and "y" is plugged into the y drive assembly (carriage)
check the drive wire wrapping on both drive assemblies - sounds like you may have already done that
check your QBOT parameters - follow along in the Version 2 User Manual, page 20 regarding "Carriages move the wrong way when running TEST.4QB"

How to Fix an I/O Device Error

Two of the most common causes of I/O (Input/Output) device errors are driver based. Typically, either the device's driver is not enabled or it is out of date. The driver component has an important function, as it acts as a motorlike force that propels USB/plug-and-play hardware into a driving action within the computer. It is the connecting communicating link signaling the CPU to a desired movement. And while not all I/O device error solutions are simplistic, as a good starting point, you can try troubleshooting using a few basic steps, and you might not need to attempt anything else.

Connector Cord Instructions

We have just tested the connector cable each version of the Pfaff, Viking and Tin Lizzie 18LS handle bars. The result was that it works as long as the setup is followed and the handle bar connection is working properly.

Works with the following machines:
ALL versions
Viking 18X8
Pfaff 18.8

Only
Tin Lizzie18LS

With this cable, you no longer need to start the sewing machine, then start QBOT. From now on, when
you press the ‘GO’ button on QBOT to start quilting, it will also start the sewing machine. When quilting
is completed, the QBOT will automatically stop the sewing machine.

HOWEVER, WHEN YOU FIRST TURN ON YOUR SEWING MACHINE YOU MUST STILL HOLD DOWN
THE ‘AUTO STITCH’ OR ‘LIZZIE STITCH’ BUTTON UNTIL YOU HEAR THE SEQUENCE OF BEEPS. THIS
ENSURES THAT THE MACHINE IS IN ‘CRUISE MODE’.

INSTALLATION

With the machine and QBOT in the off position:

Connect the 9-pin connector to the top of the QBOT.
We recommend securing the connection with the
two screws in the connector.

Next, plug the 6-pin connector into the port on the
top of the right handle bar pod. BE SURE TO ALIGN
THE PLUG CORRECTLY, then insert the plug fully.

ADJUST PARAMETERS IN QBOT

Set the Spd Ctrl On Delay to 1000. This means the
QBOT will start the sewing machine, wait one second,
then start moving the carriages. This allows
time for the machine to make a couple of tie off
stitches before sewing.

“An online quilt retreat? What’s that all about?”

Well...we’re very excited to tell you: This is a retreat like no other! We’ll have a lot of great things you look forward to in a retreat...but without the travel. And, instead of lasting only a couple of days, it’ll last all winter!

We’ll meet several times from January through March. We’ll have regularly scheduled live broadcast webinars, focused on teaching the quilt project, Dove in the Window (pictured above); we’ll have a Ladies Nite Out project; we’ll have food, fun, favors, prizes, show-and-share, and much more! The quilt measures 86” x 101”, and uses 20 assorted dark batiks in conjunction with a mottled light background batik. The selected fabrics are pulled from several color families, with a variety of batik designs/prints in each.

A little about the Quilt Kit: Retreat participants will receive laser-cut batik fabrics for the blocks and pieced border. Yardage for binding also included.

Quilting machine stitch regulation

LiTen Up Technoligies, makes many stitch regulators for different machines. Including home sewing machines and quilting machines alike.

The Quilter’s Cruise Control®, proudly made in the USA, is a stitch length regulator for use with many short-arm quilting frames. It plugs directly into your sewing machine’s foot pedal port. Using optical encoders mounted to your quilting frame, it actively changes the speed of the sewing machine as you move it to help maintain uniform stitch length throughout the quilting project.

When you have a sewing machine with a stitch reglator you may have 2 mode. The 1st mode I would like to talk about is manual mode. This is the same as having the regulator turned off. If you are using QBOT or another roboitc system you will not want to use the non regulated mode. I use the manual mode to thread paint and as a learn tool for control. The manual mode is based on the needle speed of the machine. The needle has a stitch length and speed of the needle. The encoders are not used in manual mode.

The stitch regulator is what keeps your stitchs consistantly the same length. If you have the stitch regulator turned on and you are quilting with a robotic system like QBOT you must have a regulator to get beatiful stitching. When the machine slows down you want the stitchs to remain the same length.

Here's my final thought, I will always want to have a stich regulator and have the ability to turn off the reglator. My Empress Quilting machine gives me these options. http://www.empressquilter.com/

Why bury your threads when quilting?

About 16 years ago I attended the Paducah Quilt Show for the 1st time. It was over whelming and wonderful all in the same breath.

There are many memories that I have from this show. I was able to take classes (afterwards it would have been better to wait and take classes the 2nd year). One class that I took was hand quilting and needle turning applique. During this class I learned to look at thread and needles with a different perspective. Silk thread is great for applique and small needles are easier to use. The teacher also taught us to bury our threads. Strange concept to me at the time. Burying your threads could take your quilt from award winning to just another quilt, this was the most important message I remember. Judy was the teacher and I remember her saying, "If you want to make an award winning quilt you need to bury your threads. Everyone has an award winning quilt in them.". I have never forgotten this message.

Have you wondered why some quilts win awards and others don't? Why quilts that appear beautiful to the average person are virtually unnoticed by the judges or quilt critics? What makes an award winning quilt is it detail, quilting, design or all of the reasons it wins?

The answer to those questions is not always simple to explain. Let's begin with what are they looking for, we need to look at the process of judging. The judges are properly in many aspects of quilting and trained professionals, certified in quilt judging. There are many factors involved in the decisions will be made when judging quilts at any show or event.

Point System and the Elimination System are the 2 major factors when a quilt is judged. The Point system uses a set of point values that must be considered for specific areas of design and construction. A quilt's overall appearance, its use of color, its design and quality of quilting stitch, and its borders are some areas that are given point values. With this method, quilts are judged on their own merits. However, there are drawbacks to this method. For instance, if a quilt has no borders, it automatically will lose points. Quiltmakers are thereby penalized, even though the design of the quilt does not call for borders. The number of points a quilt has earned when this system is used determines the award winning quilts, as well as the order of the ribbon awards.

The other judging system, called the Elimination System relies on forms that must be filled out by individual judges, one form from each judge per quilt. This system is more beneficial to the quilt maker, as it allows the judges to make specific comments regarding his/her quilt. After evaluating a quilt, it is then either held or released from competition. Each held quilt is then reevaluated, compared to other like quilts, and ribbons are awarded, based on this comparison.

More sights to see, take time to enjoy each day

Painted quilt blocks are barns are always enjoyable to see. This is one of the prettiest that we have seen.

The local Amish family's are enjoying the wonderful weather that we are having. The buggies are all over downtown Berlin, Ohio. We stopped in the dry goods store here downtown and the ladies that were working suggested that we got to the Farmstead Restaurant for lunch. What a wonderful treat. If you have not eaten here before try it when you are driving through. www.farmsteadrestaurant.com

When driving through West Virginia we saw a road sign for an art center Tamarack, WV. Les saw it and said that this was our next stop. It reminded us of Bera, KY. It was a place that I am glad we did not miss. The lunch was delightful. Fresh trout with great sides to choose from.
The locals produce the products that are sold. Some of the artist also make the art on site in their studios. You can sit and watch the artist create. Elaine Bliss was diligently working on her next master piece. She was excited to see that I was a quilter too.

Visiting local quilt shops in Ohio

Les and I just stopped in to some of the sewing machine shops, quilt stores and fabric shops. The Holmes County is a wonderful place to visit. Be sure to stop in and say hi while visiting the local shops.

We both enjoyed our favorite things today. Les had his homemade ice cream and I enjoyed great coffee.

What is the best way to mark your stencils?

When visiting Holmes county, Ohio this week I asked the question: What advice can you give me for marking the stencils?

Marking the stencils or free hand designs on your quilt or even for quilting with QBOT is you are going to record everyone say, a proper 'quilting pencil' is required. It is a good idea to have several different colors at your disposal, as this will improve the chances of finding one that works well on various fabrics in your quilt. My favorite is the silver quilting pencil is a 'must have' and a white is another good choice for marking printed fabrics or dark colors where the silver is not so easy to see. I also have a yellow pencil for dark colors. Ideally, you want to not have to 'lay down' thick layers of pencil markings in order to see the lines, so experiment to see which colors of pencils work the best on which fabrics.

Note: Must be quilted soon after marked because markers that are water soluble, are also humidity sensitive, so mark only small areas at a time. If you are using a high intensity light to assist you when quilting in the evening you may want to test a piece of fabric with the water soluble marking to see if the light will set the mark permanently.

Never use ink pen, permanent marker, or writing lead based pencils to mark your quilting designs--these are nearly impossible to remove. You may want to incorporate a policy we have--no ink pens or markers are allowed in the sewing room or on the cutting table ever!! Products that claim to remove pen and marker ink do not work on quilts--the batting absorbs these and they are transferred as a huge permanent stain onto the backing.

The Helping Hands Quilt Shop had a quilt on the hand sewing frame that the ladies were quilting. I asked if it would be alright to take a picture and they said sure.
Here is the quilt that they were hand quilting. What a beautiful art.

All of the mid arm machines that use the Quilters Cruise Control and QBOT are setup so that when you press the go button on QBOT the machine and QBOT begin working together.

The Tin Lizzie LS, Husqvarna Viking 18x8 and the Pfaff 18.8 machines have worked as separate entities before this week. So if you own one of the following machine, Tin Lizzie LS, Husqvarna Viking 18x8 and the Pfaff 18.8 your machine and QBOT have been started separately. Now when you are at the FINE TUNE on QBOT you will be able to select GO and the needle will start move because QBOT is hooked to the machine. Your really going to like how this works.

Note: The start up sequencing for your machine will still remain the same. Your machine will need to be in "cruise mode" for QBOT. This process is what enables your sewing machine to stop stitching when the machine is not moving. If you do not start the machine with the holding of the button on the handle bar it is likely that you will get skipping of stitches in the beginning of your quilting. Tuesday's Tip

Sewing for over 40 years does not mean that I know how to do all there is in quilting. Taking classes has always been something that I have made time for. A few years about (over 20) I took a class on paper piecing and many of the tips I still use today. Carol Doak was my teacher and she has a wonderful way of showing how to do each step. I thought that I would share some of these tips with you.

Paper piecing is fast and fun. Here are a few tips that I have learned over the past years that I have been quilting.

1. When you are considering your fabric choices choose carefully. When making smaller paper-pieced projects as most of mine have been, fabrics with large patterns may not look as good as fabrics with smaller patterns

2. 90/14 Jeans needle or sharp

3. Smaller than normal stitch length. 2.0 is what I use on my machine.

4. Make a master paper piece template. Take a highlighter and write MASTER on this page. This keeps your design from distorting.

Designs with this much detail are much easier to do when you are paper piecing.

Shelley and I have been diligently working on our next Quilting Fundamentals class. Yesterday I told her how much I enjoy applique'. Well my blocks are finished. The next step is to but the top together so that we can have a picture of the quilt top to show all of you. Below is the information that Shelley has provided about the class.

This quilting class is perfect for every skill level, whether you are a confident beginner or a seasoned quilter looking for a fun project! The class will use the popular Quilt-in-a-Day book, The Magic Vine Quilt by Eleanor Burns, as our guide. With purchase of the kit and book, the three-part class is free of charge. To help understand proportional yes and no:
Direct Proportion, although seemingly a simple concept, is one often confused and misunderstood. Many people will confuse directly proportional relationships with linear, or sometimes even non-linear relationships. This blog posting will give details on how you can determine whether a relationship is that of direct proportion or not.

Understand what the phrase directly proportional means. A very common misconception is that two variables are directly proportional if one increases as the other increases. Two variables are said to be directly proportional if, and only if, their ratio is a constant for all values of each variable. For this reason when one variable is divided by the other, the answer is always a constant.

Proportional YES, will only be able reach one direction not both unless you are putting the QBOT design in the same shape space the original design was made to go in. Example: A square will always be a square when we tell QBOT proportional YES. When we are putting that same square into a rectangle it will only reach the width and at the same time it will be centered, as in the image seen here.

Voyager SLR setup with the QBOT

There are a few things that you need to do when setting up the QBOT with the Voyager Sewing Machine. LiTen Up does a retro fit for the Voyager control box. You will need to send your control box in for the retro process to begin. Once you receive your control box back here are the step you will need to do before you begin quilting with your QBOT.

1. Check the little switch on the side of the QBOT. It should be in the up position. Use a paper clip to move the switch if needed. See the Version 2 User Manual for assistance in this. Instructions are located on page 2.
2. You must have all of the encoders and stuff hooked up to the SLR.
3. The QBOT should turn on the machine, and then the SLR takes care of the rest for the speed of the machine. The toggle switch on the Voyager control should needs to be down.

How do you use up your scrap pieces of quilt batting?

There are many ways that you can take small pieces of batting and put them back together again for quilting. Now, we are not talking about 2" pieces...this is for larger strips and pieces.

If you have a felting machine, this is a wonderful way to re-purpose your scrap batting. Use the felting needles to punch the batting back together again. It's quick, easy and there are no seam lines. Your pieces can be any shape, size, or brand to use this method. Cotton, bamboo, silk, wool and blends work best. The 100% polyester is not as easy to felt back together.

The seam lines happen when you stitch the batting together, whether it is by hand or sewing machine using a zig zag stitch. When stitching by hand or using your sewing machine, the stitching line should not be straight. If it is a straight line it is more noticeable in your quilt. (At least I always see it in mine.)

There is also a new product on the market that will help...a heat-press tape which helps you to piece your batting back together. I have seen this but I have not had the opportunity to use it as of yet. Check with your local quilt shop to see if they carry the batting tape.

Tuesday's Tip a lesson on feet

When looking to put your best foot forward in your sewing room be sure to select the right foot for the technique. There are many feet to choose from for all brands of sewing machines.

The 1st foot that is a must for every quilting studio is the 1/4" piecing foot. Some 1/4" piecing feet are scant and some are not. The most important thing to remember is to be consistent.

There are also many different piecing feet to choose from. The best this that I can suggest is that you stop by your sewing machine dealer and try the feet before you buy. Take some small quilt squares and something to measure with. Test the foot, measure the stitching, open the pieces up and remeasure to see if it is a scant or a 1/4" seam. You need to make the decision it you are looking for scant or 1/4" seams.

My favorite is the 1/4" piecing foot with a flang on the side. This keeps me on the straight and narrow. The above foot has a flang edge.

The Quartermaster is a round machine foot. It measures ¼ inch from the needle on all sides. With the foot on your machine, it will glide down your fabric allowing you to sew ¼ inch away from the edge of the ruler or template.

It also is a high collared foot. The high sides of the foot allow you to follow along the edge of a ¼ inch thick ruler or template. The high side if the foot prevents your ruler from sliding over the top of the foot. The ¼ inch thick rulers and templates prevent the ruler from sliding under the foot.

By using a variety of different rulers and guides, you can accurately stitch-in-the-ditch, baste, and create any number of curved or angular quilting designs without the use of pantographs. More fun design ideas without marking your quilt!

We have been testing rulers and templates. Some worked for us on the home machine frame and some did not! We have added to the website those rulers and templates that we feel are workable for the beginner. (This information came direct from Bayside Quilting Website). The walking foot will be the foot you use for forward stitching. You do not want to use this foot with stitches that go backwards. Only stitches that go forward like a straight stitch, serpentine stitch or zig zag stitch.

Free motion is accomplished with your feed dogs down, on pressure on your foot, tension may need to be adjusted according to the thread weight in the bobbin and on top.
We use a Free Motion Assistant when quilting something that is not on the frame with QBOT. Here are a few rules to think about:

1. SLOW DOWN, if at all possible, reduce your sewing machine's top stitching speed. This feature is available on many newer models via a button or knob. Speed control is important when you are just starting out. The speed will grow faster as you stitch more. Quilters are routinely told that they must stitch ‘all out’ or ‘pedal to the metal’ for free motion quilting. This is a fable. Each person is different and has a different learning curve. Choose a sewing speed that is only as fast as you can control.

2. For a beginner or new quilter trying to coordinate the movement of the quilt sandwich and needle speed at the same time to get even stitches takes time and practice. Don't panic this is normal. If the maximum sewing speed can be reduced by pushing a button, you can ‘stomp’ down on the foot control. Your sewing machine will not race along out of control. You won’t need to make constant adjustments on your foot pedal. You can just concentrate on moving the quilt sandwich.

Tips on Quilt Backing

Do your have questions about backing your quilt?

The easiest way to back a large quilt is to purchase one of the many wide fabrics, 108" or larger that are available from the many fabric companies. Keep in mine it isn't difficult to make backing from regular yardage and piece it together also.

Backing and batting are cut larger than the quilt top to allow for compensation that can take place during the quilting process. It also is to give some extra leeway for squaring up the entire sandwich when quilting is complete. Most quilters recommendations at least 4" excess extending past each side of the quilt.

If you want to have fun with your quilt make it a reversible quilt. To make a reversible quilt to be sure that it will look good on the front and back using a second quilt top for backing. I am careful when selecting the quilting design to machine-quilt reversible quilts. Here's why, since extra seam allowances stacked in the sandwich create bulk when they're back-to-back so pick an open design for quilting. You might want to consider pressing your seam allowances open instead of to the side when making a reversible quilt.

Piecing your backing is not too difficult. If you are piecing your backing try to load your quilting frame with the seam or seams going from left to right on the frame. This will keep the bulk down when loading.

Whenever possible try not to unlock your takeup rail. When the takeup rail is unlocked the fabric lets go and may sag on the frame without you knowing. If you keep the takeup rail locked when rolling your fabric it keeps tension on the backing and batting to prevent wrinkles, crinkles and tucks.

QBOT Tip for Today!

We have had a few emails come in about QBOT and colors. There are some designs that are not continuos. This happens when the design has more than one path. An example of this is design GTBL0080 from the version 1 QBOT Sampler Collection.

Click here to watch this video to see what information is displayed on QBOT when color changes happen. Once you see the color change you have an option of changing your thread or not. If you have chosen to change the color do this before selecting the GO button on your QBOT. If you would like to keep the same color throughout the design, then press Go to continue. QBOT will hoover from each non-continuous design to the next until the full design has completed its path.

Just a little side note:
QBOT reads designs that are in PLT formats (this is also the format the QBOT records in) and 4QB.

Make a coin purse with a zipper

Take a piece of QBOT quilted fabric.

1. Size and shape are the first things you will need to decide. 5"X10" is a good size to start with. Once you make one coin purse you can change the size and make alterations easily. This will depend upon the amount, length and width of the items you'll be placing within the bag. The shape of a square or rectangle works well. With the 5"X10" piece you will end up with a 5"X5" square coin purse.

2. The zipper will be inserted on the 5" sides of the QBOT quilted fabric. You will need the zipper to be larger then 5". Having a larger zipper makes it easier to insert.

3. Watch this video for steps on how to insert the zipper. Attach the zipper to both pieces of fabric. Fold over a half-inch of fabric on one side of the square or rectangle and iron it flat. Place the edge of the zipper beneath the fold. Stitch the zipper in place with a tight, sturdy stitch.

4.Fold your fabric in half and iron it flat.

5. Using a 1/2" seam allowance on all sides to construct the coin purse.

6. With right sides together, stitch the remaining three sides of the case together. Miter the lower corners of the bag, if desired. I like to finish the edges with a zig zag stitch or using my serger.

7. Unzip the zipper. Turn the case right side out.

8. Attach a small, sturdy loop of ribbon, or hook to one side of the opening, as a finger or wrist strap.

Fill with change and have fun purchasing new fabrics. It is also great to have when you are traveling and need change for the parking meters.

Tips for loading your fabric on a Quilting Frame

Loading Quilt/Fabric on a Quilting Frame

Rails are 119” long. Cheryl Bares says to measure the width of your quilt. Place a pin in the center of your quilt (pin to center of leader), then pin the two outer edges of your quilt in place (to ensure that you are not distorting your quilt in any way) following these directions: Subtract the width of your quilt from 119” and divide this number in half. Mark this distance with blue painters tape, measuring in from the edges of your rails on both sides. Then you can make sure your quilt isn’t skewed as you roll it. You will always use the blue tape as your reference point to make sure the quilt is straight.

One of the issues with not using a leader is that your quilt will slide on the rails, making it more difficult to prevent your quilt from skewing as you advance it.

Cheryl says remember when loading your frame the quilt top rail and the take up rail will form the look of a scroll. Rolling towards each other is the look you are want to achieve.

When using QBOT the X and Y Line for basting is for the top and the sides.

1. Load your fabric following your frame manufacturer’s instructions. Here are a few important tips (need from Cheryl—these are on the CD she gave us just before we left) as you load your fabric.
2. extra backing; if you’re using a leader; floating

Cheryl says that every time the quilt is advanced, the quilter should stitch basting stitches because as you stitch, you may have really dense stitching which will pull your fabric in. Basting stitches will prevent your edges from being wavy. (It helps prevent compensation, just like embroidery.)
Advancing the quilt

Before advancing your quilt, raise your presser foot and move your machine several inches from your last stitch. Using needle up/needle down, pull your bobbin thread up, and cut both top and bobbin threads.
A. Follow these steps to advance your quilt:
B. Remove the side clamps.
C. Put all four ratchets/rail locks in the neutral position, loosen the three rails in the front of the frame.
D. Roll the take-up roller (in the “C” space of your machine) in the same direction your quilt sandwich is loaded. Leave about 1” or less of the previous QBOT Design exposed.
E. Lock your take-up rail in place first. Smooth your fabric. Lock the ratchets (which locks your poles) in this order:
Tighten your quilt backing rail first, then lock ratchets in place.
Tighten your batting rail next, then lock ratchets in place. If you need to smooth any dimples from your batting (and you need better access), you may move your quilt top rail from it’s normal position by bringing it up and over the rail in the highest position, and rest it on top of your quilt. Smooth and tighten your quilt top rail last.
F.Replace your side clamps.
Let’s Quilt our QBOT Design

Check to make sure the height of your take-up roller is above the bed of your machine. The best way to do this is to wrap your fingers around your take-up roller and make sure that your roller and fabric are not dragging on the bed of the machine restricting its movement. There should be ample space, about the size of your finger.

Tips for Appliqueing with Freeze Paper

If you have been thinking for trying applique these tips are just in time for you to succeed. You will need a few supplies to get started. The first being a sewing machine with the right stitch. There are many machines and stitches to choose from.

The above image has many utility stitches show. You would used some of these for garment construction, home decorating and craft sewing. They are not the best to use for applique.

These stitches can be used for applique. If you are not sure which stitches work best on your machine you may need to contact your sewing machine Dealer. Ask about what foot is the best foot too. I like to use my open toe foot for applique.

There are many uses for freezer paper in your sewing room.

1. For templates, that can iron on fabrics.
2. For applique When you are using freezer paper as templates, you can trace your pattern piece on the freezer paper, cut it out, then iron the shiny side to the fabric and cut out. You can lift this to use several times for a wonderful template. We also laser cut freezer paper for our applique kits found at myqbot.com.

For freezer paper applique, you can cut out your shape on the reverse, then cut your fabric 1/4" larger. With the non-shiny side to the wrong side of fabric, fold the 1/4" to the shiny side, using the iron to hold the fabric to the freezer paper. After you do the entire piece, you can put the piece down on fabric and applique stitch around. Remove the paper afterward..
For Machine applique- simply use the freezer paper under the fabric to help the fabric stabilze- and slide under the foot of the machine

3. Press to fabric that you would like to send through your print to make stable before you do your photo transfers.

I wish I was quilting instead of swimming

The Rusty Barn Show in Denver opened today. We had a great show and as always spent time with many QBOT owners.

Then it was time to leave the show and the rain was coming down so hard and fast that there was no way to get to your vehicle without swimming a bit.

So, I took a few images of my experience. Note the pictures were taken while stopped or out of my vehicle.

I Spy Quilt

If you are looking for a fun quilt that can be hours of enjoyment make an "I Spy Quilt". My grand-kids love to play on and with their "I Spy Quilt". You will need to find and stash all of the novelty prints that you can. Each of the "I Spy Quilts" that I have made started with 5" squares. The corners were made with 1" squares. I like red or blue best. They are a nice high contrast.
There is also a fabric that is pre-printed with different squares. If you need a quick gift that is for a young child or infant you might want to check out this fabric.

I spy...a truck, balloon... This makes a great way to quilt the border and fun findings too!

Summer Salad

With the holiday weekend right around the corner it's time to make your favorite salads for your picnic. My friend Barbara called to get my pasta salad recipe. So here it is.

Picnic Pasta Salad
Ingredients

* 3 cups Tri-color spiral pasta, cooked and drained
* 2 cups cut tomatoes or substitute cherry tomatoes, cut in half
* 2 small Zucchini and/or summer squash diced or sliced
* 1 cup small Green or Black your choice pitted olives (I often purchase olives on the olive bar at my local grocery store)
* 1/2 cup Feta or Goat Cheese Optional (I always add the cheese)

* DRESSING:
* 1/3 cup tarragon vinegar
* 1/2 cup olive or vegetable oil
* 2 teaspoons dill weed
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon sugar
* 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
* 1/4 teaspoon pepper
* 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Directions

1. In a large bowl, mix together pasta, tomatoes, squash and olives; set aside. In a jar with tight-fitting lid, combine all of the dressing ingredients; shake well. Pour over salad; toss lightly. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. I like it best when chilled overnight.

Finding specialty oils & vinegars is not always easy. We purchase our oils & vinegars at Fustini's. They have 4 locations in Michigan. We shop at Kerrytown and Traverse City.

Tuesday's Tip on Organization

Today's tip brings us past spring and into summer cleaning and organizing.

In order to start the organization process you will need a few supplies. First you will need what I will refer to as skirt hangers. The other items to add to your supply list is a tape measure, room in a closet or a portable closet and an Excel Sheet on your computer.

1st measure your hanger size. This will be what size you will fold all of your "UFO's, Projects and Quilt Tops". Folding a little larger then the hanger is okay too. Keeping all of your UFO's visual will help you to finish them. When things are out of sight they will also be out of mind.

When you have projects with a top, back and binding place all of the project items on the same hanger until you take it to the frame. I often loose items when they are not purchased together. This helps me to keep on top of what I need to complete the project too. These are the projects that we are working on for QBOT Club next month. On each hanger we have married the fabric and backing together. The leftover backing will be used for the binding.

This close up view of the project fabric with the backing should give you an idea of how this may work for you.

Sometimes the project needs some information with the hanger of items. If this is true for you also using these hang tags work great to put important information on and then hang it on the hanger.

The Excel Spread Sheet will be used to catalog your hangers whether it be a project or a UFO. This is true if you have many UFO's and project like me!

Embroidery and Quiting

Over the past few weeks I have been working on making pieces that incorporate embroidery and quilting. The table runner is one of the first projects that we will be using to teach different techniques for quilting. It was really fun to embroidery and piece together.

Try embroidery with your quilting or piecing. It is lots of fun!

Tuesday Tip for Today!

Positioning your foot to have QBOT move in the right direction can be a challenge. So a couple of people put their heads together and came up with a solution. Our newest tool is call the Corner Finder. How it works is amazing. You position your foot in the corner and line up the distance you would like the design to stitch.

The Corner Finder has markings for the distance from the needle to the outer edge of the quilt block or where you have designated. It was originally designed to help assist you when you do not know where the edges of your space is for instance a circle or an odd shaped block. This will also work in an area that you do not have 4 corners the video we have you will see us use the Corner Finder tool.

There is an inner notch and an outer notch for placement. You will find that the visual you need for positioning is better using one notch over the other. No fumbling or worrying where things are located.

Heading to the track!

Tomorrow morning we leave for MIS, Michigan International Speedway for the Nascar race weekend. It's about 1 hour from our home. This is an annual event that we attend with our friends Michael and Phyllis.

Last night I finished the "Quiltilated Window Shades" and Les could not be happier. We have an old Winnebago RV from 1982. Now Les would like to see the shade for all of the windows in the RV. There are only 4 more so that's not too bad. Finding more of the same fabric will be the challenge. The windows that I've finished are somewhat larger then your average size. 73x30 is what they measured and there are two windows total. The next 4 windows are much smaller.

It funny when we were hanging the shades I was noticing the wall paper would make a great quilting pattern for QBOT. It is interesting how everything in my sight seems to look like a quilting pattern. So I decided to used this wall paper for my next design.

Did you know that there's an app for that!
Do you have a smart phone, iPad, or a device that you are able to download and use oan app with? There are many valuable apps that you might want to check out.

There are a few for quilting that I have been using for easy access to information.

Quiltref: This app offers a reference chart for bed sizes. I often use this app when making quilt tops to fit a specific size bed. If you are a hand sewer you may find that the hand stitching guide is handy when checking how many stitches per inch you have created.

Quiltcal: Robert Kaufman developed a quilting calculator for figuring out over 6 different formulas for quilters. The calculation that I use most is the triangles. Here is what Robert Kaufman says about their app. This calculator determines the size of the square piece you'll need to cut in order to create both unfinished set-in triangles and unfinished corner triangles, based on the size of the finished square. (Note that set-in triangles are sometimes called quarter square triangles, or QSTs, and corner triangles are sometimes called half square triangles, or HSTs.)

Block fab-HD: If you use any quilting software such as EQ7 you will surly like this free app. Design on your iPad from over 60 classic blocks. Change colors, setting and much more.

Quiltfab: When I research apps at my first Apple class we located this wonderful app. It is the quilting app I use most often. When at my local quilt shop it helps me to calculate borders, binding, backing and more.

Vacation

It is amazing to me how many people have asked me where are you going on vacation this week. When we answer that we are staying home people ask why. We love our home and when you are traveling most weeks staying home is great to us. My husband Les and I love to work in our yard, relax and enjoy movies home is a great place to be.

Yesterday was a day of racing. Almost every weekend until November or snow we will be racing. Les took FTD, Fastest Time of Day. He was smoking fast.

On Thursday we will be going to the Nascar Race at the Michigan International Speedway. This is a yearly event that we enjoy attending. Just in case of rain I have 4 quilts packed to hand stitch the binding on.

Even when on vacation I will be sewing and quilting just because I enjoy spending time in my studio.

Tuesday's Tip

Borders are sometimes a challenge to quilt. When doing borders you may need to turn your quilt to achive better results with the side borders. This is something that we have taught on our quilting Webinars.

The tip today is stitching your borders on to your quilt and how do you know what size to make the border.

When piecing together the border strips I cut the four borders along the length of the fabric when ever possible. If needed I will piece the strips together on a 45 degree angle.

Lay out the quilt on the floor or cutting table depending on the size, straight and flat. Now measure one side of the quilt. You do this from the center of the quilt. Cut the second strip the same way.

Complete these steps for all sides of your quilt. The sample show is our "Sea Life Quilt-Streak o'Lightning. You can find this quilt kit in many colors at http://myqbot.com/kits_traditional.html.

Class with Katie Pasquini Masopust

What reason would I be taking a day off is the question that was asked of me last week. Well I am here to tell you that I am taking two classes with Katie Pasquini Masopust. Today's class was "Fractured Landscapes" Tomorrow we are going to paint and quilt.

Learning how to see values in your fabrics was a challenge today. Once we worked with our fabrics for a bit we were able to put them into the 7 value stacks to begin the adventure with our "Fractured Landscape". Fractured Landscape Quilts is a book that Katie Pasquini Masopust wrote in 1996. It is a wealth of information and a must have for your library.

Katie is now painting and then creating a quilt from the painting. I am very intrigued by this process being an artist. It would be great to take a workshop in this technique.

Thanks Katie for the great class. I think that I have found my next picture for my fractured landscape. This picture is from my hosta garden just before the bloom opened. What do you think?

Tueday's Tip How to turn the turnbuckle/tensioner on the drive wire

A tensioner is the same as a turnbuckle.

n.
A metal coupling device consisting of an oblong piece internally threaded at both ends into which the corresponding sections of two threaded rods are screwed in order to form a unit that can be adjusted for tension or length.

Turn the center of the turnbuckles at the top fixings. Turning them to the left should tighten the turnbuckles, however this may vary, so check that you are indeed tightening rather than loosening. Tighten the turnbuckles as much as you can by hand, do not use a tool as this will overtighten the turnbuckles.

This image is the incorrect way to tighten.

Here is how you want to tighten your turnbuckle/tensioner.

1. Attach the wire rope to the eyelet or bracket on your frame setup.

2. Attach the wire rope eyelet ends to the one of the two eyelets of the turnbuckle.

3. Place your fingers on the middle section of the turnbuckle (which will look like a metal loop with two threaded screws entering it). Using your fingers, turn the turnbuckle clockwise to tighten the tension of your supports or counter-clockwise to release tension.

Here is the most important note: do not let the eyelets on the end of the turnbuckle turn while you tighten the turnbuckle/tensioner. If the eyelets move while you are tightening the turnbuckle/tensioner it will loosen as you quilt with QBOT. There is no need to glue your turnbuckle/tensioner if they are tighten in the manner.

May your turnbuckle/tensioner always stay tight!

It's amazing!

Today started out like every other day busy. Thinking that I would not accomplish all of the projects that needed to be completed this week. Well it's amazing how much I was able to get accomplished today.

The QBOT Club duffel bag is ready for the final touches, 2 Quiltedlated Window Shades are close to completion, and next quarters Quilting Fundamentals project is ready to piece the quilt top together. 18 pieced blocks are pressed and ready to go.

Two more surprise projects are ready for the instruction to be written and while doing all of this I baked 2 dozen cupcakes too!

I'm taking tomorrow off and before preparing for your husbands Social Security (65th) Birthday I wanted to wish you each a great Memorial Day!

Do you sort your scraps?

The reason I'm asking if you sort your fabric scraps is our tip today will help you to be successful and organized too!

Not everything that I do is laser cut because of this I have scraps. So I went to Target and purchased a 3 bin hamper to sort my scrapes in.

Bin 1 is strips (it was batting except the it filled much faster then the fabric did. Batting has it's own hamper.
Bin 2 is batik fabrics
Bin 3 is printed fabrics.

When the bin is full I take the scrapes to the cutting table and cut 5" charm squares from the printed fabrics.

Batiks take a little longer to fill the bin. I cut these into strips for kaleidoscope quilts.

It's sewing time!

Storms and bad weather bring sewing time at my house.

Today has been a great day to be in my sewing room. When it rains my machines are all stitching.

I am thankful everyday that I am blessed with a wonderful husband and a great sewing room. The family's in the mid west going through the stormy weather are in my thoughts and prayers.

Rainy days are always welcome at my home because it is easier to stay in my sewing room then to have the erg to go outside and work in the yard.

Wait until you see what we have been creating for QBOT Club. It is almost complete. Shelley and I are very excited about the technique that we are doing on the frame with QBOT.
